چکیده
The worldwide microplastics pollution is a serious environmental and health problem that currently not effectively mitigated. In this work we tested jellyfish mucus as new bioflocculent material capable of sequestration polystyrene in aqueous environments. Mucus was collected from different species used to trap fluorescently tagged microspheres. efficiency removal using varying concentrations mucus. interaction between the determined by viscosity measurements confocal laser scanning microscopy. Different preparation methods were also tested: freshly prepared, mechanically sheared, freeze-thawed, freeze-dried, hydrolyzed results demonstrate can efficiently sequester particles suspension. fraction removed highest with prepared decreased freeze-thawing freeze-drying. ability completely lost imply intact has potential be biopolymer removing material.

Plastics are persistent synthetic polymers that accumulate as waste in the marine environment. Microplastic (MP) particles are derived from the breakdown of larger debris or can enter the environment as microscopic fragments. Because filter-feeder organisms ingest MP while feeding, they are likely to be impacted by MP pollution. To assess the impact of polystyrene microspheres (micro-PS) on the...
متن کاملThe impact of polystyrene microplastics on feeding, function and fecundity in the marine copepod Calanus helgolandicus.
Microscopic plastic debris, termed “microplastics”, are of increasing environmental concern. Recent studies have demonstrated that a range of zooplankton, including copepods, can ingest microplastics. Copepods are a globally abundant class of zooplankton that form a key trophic link between primary producers and higher trophic marine organisms. Here we demonstrate that ingestion of microplastic...
متن کاملA comparison between the effects of polylactic acid and polystyrene microplastics on Daphnia magna
The effects of microplastics on zooplankton are an increasing environmental concern. Both primary microplastics that are produced as constituents of cosmetic products, as well as secondary microplastics that are formed by degradation of larger plastic debris, are ubiquitous in aquatic environments. Today, primary microplastics are being phased out and replaced by plant-derived bioplastics. Whet...
متن کاملAccumulation of nanoparticles in “jellyfish” mucus: a bio-inspired route to decontamination of nano-waste
The economic and societal impacts of nano-materials are enormous. However, releasing such materials in the environment could be detrimental to human health and the ecological biosphere. Here we demonstrate that gold and quantum dots nanoparticles bio-accumulate into mucus materials coming from natural species such as jellyfish. One strategy that emerges from this finding would be to take advant...
متن کاملSynthesis of Silica/Polystyrene Nanocomposite Particles by Miniemulsion Polymerization
Miniemulsion polymerization is one of heterogeneous polymerization method that can be effectively used to synthesis of various novel organic-inorganic nanocomposite particles. This method can provide opportunity of good incorporation between the polymer and inorganic phases in the formed submicrometer-sized particles. In this article, we report preparation polystyrene/silica nanocomposite p...
